I loved this book. The vocabulary as delineated by sue2138 can be worked around by having the child look closely at the expression and body language of the young girl and especially the worms.

The vocabulary can also be looked at positively as a way for the child to build their vocabulary through story and in context.

Obviously those who are really really grossed out by mud may not enjoy this book but I think it is safe to say that most young and still free spirited children will get a kick out of this story.

Photosynthesis is a concept which children should be able to learn and this story could be the root point in them gaining interest in this process which plants and trees share.

Love this author, but every page had a very hard vocabulary word (ex. internalize, photosynthesize, traumatize) which stopped the flow of the story as my 6 year old kept saying "what does that mean, Mom?"
