Ken Follett's Fall of Giants , the first novel in his extraordinary historical epic The Century Trilogy, was an international sensation. Winter of the World picks up right where the first book left off, as its five interrelated families enter a time of turmoil, beginning with the rise of the Third Reich, through the Spanish Civil War and the great dramas of World War II, to the explosions of the American and Soviet atomic bombs and the beginning of the long Cold War.

Carla von Ulrich, born of German and English parents, finds her life engulfed by the Nazi tide, until she commits a deed of great courage and heartbreak. . . .  American brothers Woody and Chuck Dewar, each with a secret, take separate paths to momentous events. . . . English student Lloyd Williams discovers in the crucible of the Spanish Civil War that he must fight Communism just as hard as Fascism.... Daisy Peshkov, a driven social climber, cares only for popularity and the fast set, until the war transforms her life, while her cousin Volodya carves out a position in Soviet intelligence that will affect not only this war but also the war to come. These characters and many others find their lives inextricably entangled as their experiences illuminate the cataclysms that marked the century.

I've been reading Ken Follett since "Eye of the Needle." While "Fall of Giants" kept me eagerly burning the midnight oil in page-turning delight, this one had much that came across as filler in an attempt to match the epic 985 pages of "Fall of Giants," rather than add to the storyline. And, purposely writing his characters into historical fact seemed contrived and a little self-indulgent. Having said that, it is Ken Follett, so perhaps he's entitled. And, someone less knowledgeable about World War II might not even notice. As it is, it will take me a while to build up the interest to tackle the final installment of the trilogy. But, you can bet that is exactly what I'll do. Because, it is Ken Follett.

I can't wait to start the third one. There is a rare sophistication to Ken Follett's Century Trilogy that draws you in and gently rolls you through the lives of generation after generation of dynamic and varied characters during a shocking part of our recent past. Historical fiction doesn't get better than this.

This book 2 of the series is just as good as book 1. This series is incredible. I have learned so much about the World Wars, politics in the 1900's, and culture through this wonderful story and rich cast of characters. I can't imagine learning more history in a more enjoyable way than this series. Truly amazing.
