UNRATED
// We don't have slavery anymore. \\
I heard this mistaken assertion recently, spoken by an Afro-Brazilian academic during a discussion of the sad fire at their museum of history in Brazil.
Sad to say, but there are still several African countries were it remains not only legal, but is still an existing human condition to this very moment.
Slavery is still practiced in areas throughout the Middle East and Asia - - certainly, with sex trafficking it is in effect the world over, including China, Russia and America.
In this documentary, we see it most definitely in practice in Bangladesh, although not mentioned in this context, but should have been, is Thailand, where it also occurs. [In Burma or Myanmar, it is practiced even more so.]
I am not recommending this documentary - - it sends very mixed signals. There is one especially obscene and stomach-turning segment and, no, I am not referring to the decidedly anti-erotic nude scene during the Mexican portion, but to the filming of an obviously disturbed young Bangladeshi girl; either suffering from mental illness, or a personality break or chronic shock - - going from an innocent young girl on Monday to being sold into sexual slavery by her family on Tuesday, and expected to service between 10 to 30 customers a night! ! !
A recently published work which should be in stock at every library across the nation and planet was written by Prof. Meghan Sobel, titled: Sex Trafficking and the Media: Perspective from Thailand and the United States - - a most enlightening survey!
Another is Lydia Cacho's book, Slavery, Inc. - - coverage of brutal sex trafficking the world over.
Yes, slavery still exists and is still as vile and despicable!
I realize the director is attempting to present prostitution in its raw, bleak and lonely form, and he does succeed at this, but still one might receive positive views from several of the prostitutes interviewed [interviewing a drunken, possibly alcoholic individual is not exactly the most credible of sources].

And, as the saying goes.... "What's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?"

*Be Warned!* - Whores' Glory is an extremely stark and vivid "human-nature" documentary that (due to its sad, depressing, and startlingly candid subject matter) is certainly not going to appeal to everyone.

Filmed exclusively in Thailand, Bangladesh, and Mexico - If you've ever been curious to know what a whore's life might be like, then here's a professionally presented production that'll certainly open your eyes to all of the ins & outs (pardon the pun) of such a down'n'dirty business as that of the prostitution trade.

Competently directed by German film-maker, Michael Glawogger - My one big beef about Whores' Glory has to do with Glawogger's choice not to document the ways and means of whores both in a European setting, as well as a glimpse at all of the slutty action in America, too.

I personally think that that would have definitely given the viewer a much more rounded perspective on the "world's-oldest-profession" as it exists today..... (*Watch video-trailer*)

*Special note* - While visiting Liberia in 2014, film-maker, Michael Glawogger (54 at the time) died from malaria.

Not that there was much joy in prostitution to start with, but this film demolished any illusions I might once have had, as a male. Supposedly prostitutes service a man's erotic needs, but to me there would be nothing less erotic than fucking a woman whose only interest in you was for the money and who was most likely forced into the life. These are not the elegant call girls of middle-class male fantasy. These are women who've been beaten down by poverty, drug addiction, and raw human cruelty. How could any man in his right mind take pleasure from further debasing one of these poor creatures? There ought to be a law. Not a law against having sex for money . . . a law against having sex with poor people for money. (But I know I'm wasting my breath.)

What a devastatingly amazing documentary! One of the best films I've ever seen. Besides making the truth of this subject unmissable, Glawogger has captured some of the most incredible imagery of places some would never venture, candid conversations that reveal what many refuse to hear. With the Supreme Court ruling which deems prostitution legal in Canada, this is an important film for those who would oppose this. If you think it should remain criminal, because you think you are protecting women, or that it is legalized slavery, then watch this film through, and then try to justify maintaining that view. Just the fact that our current model allows for monsters like Willie Pickton to thrive.Count the bodies, count the bruises, then look into the eyes of the working girls in the opening section. They are no more slaves than any of us in a McJob these days. Healthy, well fed, medical care, fed and clothed kids, in a society that does not judge is the least harmful of choices for the world's oldest profession. Sex Happens!
