Known for her moving characters and emotional honesty, Mary Alice Monroe brings readers a beautifully rendered story that explores the fragile yet enduring bond between mothers and daughters. Caretta Rutledge thought she'd left her Southern roots and troubled family far behind. But an unusual request from her mother--coming just as her own life is spinning out of control--has Cara heading back to the scenic Lowcountry of her childhood summers. Before long, the rhythms of the island open her heart in wonderful ways as she repairs the family beach house, becomes a bona fide "turtle lady" and renews old acquaintances long thought lost. But it is in reconnecting with her mother that she will learn life's most precious lessons--true love involves sacrifice, family is forever and the mistakes of the past can be forgiven.

I'm catching up on my 'Beach House' books. For some unfathomable reason I reason I read Beach House Memories before I read the first three. I am rectifying that mistake.

Mary Alice Monroe is truly a lyricist in 'The Beach House'. There are so many beautiful phrases I couldn't begin to count them all. One of my favorites is

"Moonlight poured through the leaves like magic through lace."

As well as beautiful writing, the story is a calm, but at times stormy tale of family relationships, lost relationships and found relationships, with others and within the characters themselves. We come to know these women as vividly as we do the Lowcountry of South Carolina through their eyes and love.

4 stars and I can't wait to read 'Swimming Lessons' and 'Beach House Memories'.

Caretta left her home and her family far behind. Then her mother makes a request she cannot refuse, and she finds herself back in the “Lowcountry” of her childhood.

My Grandma gave me this book to read and it took me two years to pick it up, but once I started I couldn't stop, and two days later I can say it was one of the best books I have ever read, next to anything Jodi Picoult has written. Simply a beautiful, satisfying read!
