Nine-year-old Nicholas Benedict has more problems than most children his age. Not only is he an orphan with an unfortunate nose, but he also has narcolepsy, a condition that gives him terrible nightmares and makes him fall asleep at the worst possible moments. Now he's being sent to a new orphanage, where he will encounter vicious bullies, selfish adults, strange circumstances -- and a mystery that could change his life forever. Luckily, he has one important thing in his favor: He's a genius. On his quest to solve the mystery, Nicholas finds enemies around every corner, but also friends in unexpected places -- and discovers along the way that the greatest puzzle of all is himself.

Nowhere close to being as good as the "mysterious Benedict society" books

I really enjoyed this look into Nicholas Benedict's childhood. Parts of it were sorrowful, yet Nicholas pulls through and thrives in the process, learning about himself and others.
The themes of the importance of family & friends, loyalty, belief in self are in the forefront, in a humorous, interesting and warm way. Learning to work together and confront bullies also plays a large role.
The Mysterious Benedict series has interesting characters and situations that kids will love. This is a wonderful addition to the series.

With such a great title and concept, I am disappointed with this novel. It is the most pretentious, long-winded read I have ever suffered through. Why 470 pages to get to a worthy treasure, but why? I cannot picture the young person that would fancy this read. The premise is so intriguing, and it is very difficult for me to be bored with a read, but this is not a series that I will follow or recommend to my students.
