As the Empire of the Sun crumbles upon itself and a rain of firebombs falls upon Japan, the final death march of a nation is echoed in millions of smaller tragedies. Seita and his younger sister Setsuko are two children born at the wrong time, in the wrong place, and now cast adrift in a world that lacks not the care to shelter them, but simply the resources. They are forced to fend for themselves in the aftermath of fires that swept entire cities from the face of the earth.

This movie is not suitable for children under 13 years of age. One interesting note is that the Americans are never mentioned during this movie, instead focusing on the trials of those coping with the war. Spoiler: The film is based on a true story. Akiyuki Nosaka lost his little sister during the war to malnutrition and blamed himself for her death. He wrote "Hotaru no haka" ("A Grave of Fireflies") in 1967 to come to terms with the loss.

This movie has so much artistic merit. That being said, I have never been more incredibly depressed watching something.

We are watching / rewatching all the Studio Ghibli movies in the library. Grave of the Fireflies is not one of the usual Ghibli quirky, world-building types. It is set in the war, as Japan is bombed and people starve. It's probably the saddest movie I've ever seen. The love and affection between brother and sister Seita and Setsuko is so immensely powerful I am in tears recalling it.

Released back in 1988 - "Grave of the Fireflies" is an animated, feature-length, Japanese production.

This film's depressing and equally tragic story looks at the horrors of war.

IMO - "Grave of the Fireflies" has both its fair share of good moments, as well as its not-so-good moments, too.

This stands among the finest films I've ever seen. It reveals the true cost of war in such away as to make any person of conscience pause and reflect before ever supporting war again. An important achievement, an important film.

Beautifully haunting. Definitely one of the saddest movies I've ever seen.

A touching sad movie. Should be watched in tandem with This Corner of the World, same era, almost same backdrops.

Yeah. OK. "Grave of the Fireflies" was (Indeed) cute. (And - Yeah. OK) Its 2-D animation was nicely done. (And - Yeah. OK) Its story was (Indeed) depressing (And - Yeah. OK) tragic, too.

But, with that all said - I really don't get what all the fuss is about here when it comes to praising this 1988 Japanese picture to the heavens. I don't.

What baffled me the most about this pre-CGI production was that (with its story clearly being set in Japan and the characters all being Japanese) - Why-oh-why did everyone look either totally white, or, at best, like half-breeds to me? Eh? Why?.... It's true.

Nobody looked believably Japanese at all. I mean - If the director of this production (Isao Takahata) was honestly aiming for realism here (and I'm sure he was) - He sure missed the mark on this particular matter by a Japanese country mile. He did. Indeed.

Great cinematic art, but be prepared; this is a top contender for the saddest movie ever made (and, no doubt, winner for animated film.) It will tear you up.

Very well done movie, quite emotional. I think because it is so sad, I probably won't watch it more than once though.
