A quick-witted, genre-bending, and wildly imaginative thriller about the secret organization keeping England--and the world--safe from supernatural threats (one staff meeting at a time).
"The body you are wearing used to be mine." So begins the letter Myfanwy Thomas is holding when she awakes in a London park surrounded by bodies all wearing latex gloves. With no recollection of who she is, Myfanwy must follow the instructions her former self left behind to discover her identity and track down the agents who want to destroy her.

She soon learns that she is a Rook, a high-ranking member of a secret organization called the Chequy that battles the many supernatural forces at work in Britain. She also discovers that she possesses a rare, potentially deadly supernatural ability of her own.

In her quest to uncover which member of the Chequy betrayed her and why, Myfanwy encounters a person with four bodies, an aristocratic woman who can enter her dreams, a secret training facility where children are transformed into deadly fighters, and a conspiracy more vast than she ever could have imagined.

Filled with characters both fascinating and fantastical, THE ROOK is a richly inventive, suspenseful, and often wry thriller that marks an ambitious debut from a promising young writer.

Opinion

From Library Staff

This inventive, darkly funny book about a formidable woman is just the kind of story we think Diana would find to be a good read.

"The body you are wearing used to be mine." So reads the letter Myfanwy Thomas discovers in her pocket when she wakes up surrounded by a circle of dead bodies wearing latex gloves.
From the first line, this book drew me in with its intriguing premise (Myfanwy works at the British equivalent of the CIA - but for magic!) and snarky heroine. It reads a bit like Harry Potter for adults, if Harry was a mid-level bureaucrat who periodically had to deal with issues like a house full of man-eating purple fungus in Bath. --Rachel (See more of my picks by following WoodneathRachel)

This is an awesome mystery adventure story. It made me think of Nightvale because of all the crazy random things happening. I can't wait to read the next one. The narrator for the audiobook is amazing.

One of the most unique stories I've ever read, O'Malley has written a wildly entertaining tale of the paranormal. Myfawny Thomas' journey from timid amnesiac to powerful Rook is filled with suspense and a very colorful cast of supporting characters. From a being who controls 3 bodies simultaneously with one brain to a man who can contort his body into almost any shape, this book offers both humor and suspense to go along with an engaging story

This was just a super fun read! The characters are colorful (think of Myfanwy's journal as a character itself!), and the book doesn't take itself too seriously. It's funny (actually funny!), a bit ridiculous, and this might not seem to make sense, but it comes together so well. It's a little supernatural, weird spy thriller, part comedy. I really enjoyed reading this, and look forward to more from this author!

Most excellent book! Could not put it down and once I was finished with it I just had to read Stiletto.

This will appeal to fans of Dr. Who and/or Jasper Fforde's Tuesday Next titles. Fast paced, funny, supernatural, and British!
