Gettysburg ----- DVD. An excellent, riveting production depicting the turning point in the US civil war. This was the pivotal point in the hostilities between the Union Armies of the North and the Southern Confederacies forces of the South. This was a battle that almost didn’t happen; forces from both sides stumbled across each other and then re-enforced each other until the stage was set for the largest battle ever in the western hemisphere. The re-created action; the smoke;, the dust; the troops on both sides shredded is overwhelming in its re-enactment. New weapons, put into use for the first time are depicted, their destructive power explained with detail. The carnage, the bloodletting, the dismembered bodies may be more than you wanted to see. An excellent video, explained by experts as the battle unfolds on the screen. This is the civil war in absolute detail.

For someone like myself who knows little about the war between the States this was an informative and fairly easy- to-follow evocation of the horror of civil war and of this battle in particular. The dramatised sequences look very authentic and the use of aerial photography, maps etc is effective. My only gripe is the occasional exercise in sentimentality: two individuals die alone, yet their dying words are recited to us. Otherwise, great stuff.

A good documentary about the biggest battle ever fought on North American soil and the great turning point of the Civil War. Feature film director brothers Ridley and Tony Scott are among the producers of the documentary, which uses reenactors interspersed with historian and expert commentary. The program sheds light on parts of the battle that tend to get overlooked, such as the fight at Culp's Hill, while not paying as much attention to parts that are often highlighted in other sources, such as Little Round Top. It features multiple points of view, both commanders and foot soldiers, and the program's quite graphic, so obviously it's not for everyone.
