The founder of a cult rock band shares her outrageous tale of growing up much faster than planned.

In 1985, Kristin Hersh was just starting to find her place in the world. After leaving home at the age of fifteen, the precocious child of unconventional hippies had enrolled in college while her band, Throwing Muses, was getting off the ground amid rumors of a major label deal. Then everything changed: she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and found herself in an emotional tailspin; she started medication, but then discovered she was pregnant. An intensely personal and moving account of that pivotal year, Rat Girl is sure to be greeted eagerly by Hersh's many fans.

I really, really wanted to like this book but nothing seemed to be happening. I made it about 40% of the way through but it just didn't hold my interest (surprisingly).

A great rock memoir by the founder of the Throwing Muses. This book talks about her struggles with mental illness, getting pregnant at 19, being the first American band to be signed by music label 4AD and her friendship with actress Betty Hutton. I expected to like this book, but I didn't know I'd love it so much. Hersh's lyrical, poetic writing style and honesty make it a must-read rock memoir! I hope she writes 10 more.

This is one of my favorite books and have read it many times. My review can't do it justice. This is an original story (which happens to be her life) and written in a fresh and enjoyable style. The book is hard to put down. It's funny, sad, fascinating, and always interesting. Having lived in Rhode Island during the time of this book, I can tell you the places and people she describes are true. I highly recommend.

Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to love this book, which just goes to show that my dreams aren't up to snuff. I loved every minute of this book, reading it was like making a new and wonderful friend, with whom you have nothing in common, but it only makes you enjoy their company more. Kristen Hersh is delightful, funny, insightful and kind, and this book was a joy.
