Drama based on the lives of Edith "Big Edie" Bouvier Beale and her daughter, Edith "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale. Raised as Park Avenue débutantes, they withdrew from New York society. As their wealth and contact with the outside world dwindled, so did their grasp on reality. They were reintroduced to the world when international tabloids learned of a health department raid on their home and the Maysles brothers made a documentary about them.

There's the documentary with the actual Beales and there's this movie with Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore playing the actual Beales and they're much more engaging. The Big Edie and Little Edie Beale were cousins of Jackie Kennedy who just went right off the deep end. Big Edie took to her bed and gave up their house in fashionable East Hampton to entropy and feral cats and raccoons. Little Edie lost her hair from anxiety, gave up her show biz ambitions and holed up in the disintegrating family home. Jackie did come to their rescue to no avail, however. They were too far gone though Little Edie managed, at last, to gain some success as novelty cabaret act. Both of the actresses are outstanding. This is the movie that established Drew as a serious actress of no small talent.

Having seen the documentary I enjoyed the movie but agree much of the 'how' is missing from the story. However it was well acted. I agree the accents seemed forced, but if you are familiar with the Hamptons and the accent, you will realize it is a very good approximation.
More analysis of the situation, relationships, and family interactions would perhaps have helped colour the story a bit more, but overall I thought it a very good representation of a very complex situation.

I have seen the documentary long prior to watching this, and the filmmakers here filled in a lot of missing lead-up information to how the decline of the two Edies came about. Some of the meatiest performances I've seen from these two ladies (Barrymore, especially).

I saw the original documentary after viewing this film. Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange nailed these two women down to every movement, voice intonation, facial expression and emotion. It is almost as if Edith and Edy's ghosts inhabited the actresses' bodies.

Enjoyed this little known account of the lovely skeletons in the closet. This story is enough to make us stop and reevaluate assumed values and temper the inclination to judge others based on our own needs and desires. A disturbing and yet enjoyable evening with these two women.

Story concerns two women, mother and daughter, who started out with "everything"- famous/high class family name, jewels, fabulous houses etc. Then they "lost it" both money/status wise and emotionally and end up living in their run down mansion "Grey Gardens'. The film is based on the documentary from the 1970's of the same name. The story is fascinating but depressing-what happens to two women who don't play "the game" properly and end up alone. They were discarded by husbands, lovers, society etc. and so create their own reality. Both the doc. and this movie have a voyeuristic feel but i think this is what has kept the story so fascinating over the years. The original doc. has spawned not only this movie but a recent hit Broadway musical called-you guessed it -"Grey Gardens".

The acting was good, but given that, I must say it was the weirdest thing that I have ever watched. Why is it that rich , upper class, old money, people are called eccentric and the other folk with similar behaviours are said to have mental health problems. Mental health issues are common but only an elite group get labeled eccentric.
I'll watch the documentary. You know live and learn.

It's a fine movie in its own right, but before seeing it, watch the documentary. Even if you don''t like documentaries, it is one of the best documentaries ever made and the whole story is a remarkable human document.

I found Drew Barrymore's terrible accent (just when she got rid of the lispy speech impediment) really distracting in this film -- seems like she couldn't make up her mind between Kennedy's New England accent and a Brooklyn accent. (And yes I realize that they were in the Hamptons.) Very surprised so many people gave it so many stars. Actually I thought Jessica Lange's portrayal really highlighted how bad Drew's was. Looking forward to seeing the actual documentary. I was also distracted that Drew Barrymore with makeup to age her looked so much like Julianne Moore, haha.

If you've seen the Grey Gardens documentary then you will appreciate this film. Drew & Jessica do a great job, but no one would be as great as the original. I enjoyed seeing more backstory to these two fascinating women.
