You know - When it comes to the likes of 1950's Japanese cinema - I, for one, would much sooner watch a hilariously clumsy "Godzilla" picture rather than endure this absurd, dry-as-dust "Art House" nonsense, any day.

And, speaking about the phrase "Art House" - That, to me, is just a hoity-toity term that excuses all sorts of annoying inadequacies in a picture which would otherwise not be tolerated (in a non-"Art House" production).

This irksome term also suggests to me that if one dislikes a film that fits into this snobbishly elitist category that that automatically reduces them to being nothing but an unsophisticated heathen. It's true.

Anyway - With Rashomon now being nearly 70 years old - I really did try to cut it some slack. But - Let me tell ya - Had this film been an American production - You can bet that it wouldn't be receiving all of the praise and reverence that it has garnered for itself over these many, long years. Nope. You can bet your bottom yen on that.

I know that this is a classic film by a renowned director (Kurosawa) with a famous Japanese actor (Mifune). But it would have been much better had the characters been more likable and less annoying. As it was, it was hard to care in the end who committed the murder.

It's not that there are different versions of the story because people honestly saw things differently. Here, folks are actually lying. Not 'the Rashomon Effect' as I understood it. Cool film, obviously influential to future filmmakers, but also clearly a product of its times. For me, Mifune's maniacal laughter was already wearing thin in 'Seven Samurai' but it fit the character. For this role...distracting. Overall, though, it's not hard to see why 'Rashomon' is a classic.

For me it is the view of life. That is, I see what I think is going on and other people also see what is going on and all the views are different. This is a very good perspective of life. Sometimes people may view me as the crazy person, while at the same time I view myself as the normal one. I have watched this movie many times and every time it makes me think about my one perceptions of what I think is the true view of events and what is the true view.

Good Gried, I can't get three people who have watched this film to agree on what it is trying to say. Weirdly, everyone I know who has seen it does agree that it is a great film. And the confusion over theme is obviously intentional on Kurosawa's part, and may itself be the theme. This movie is hypnotic, a mystery that is better for it's central questions never being answered. This film is the parent to 'The Usual Suspects', 'Fight Club', 'Sucker Punch', 'Momento', and every other unreliable narrator tale told since. I've read the story it was based on, and while interesting, this is a case where the film has elevated the material well beyond what the literature originally achieved. This is a masterpiece worthy of the term.

The breaks to the flashback scenes are not clear sometimes; the photography/ cinematography is quite good but its sometimes awkward to make out whats being shown. The acting okay - there are lots of cutbacks and everyone seems to become like Bambi on ice when they have a sword in their hands.

Unexpectantly tender - beautiful filmography. Aspiring film students and directors will enjoy the extras explaining how certain effects were conveyed.

There is also an element of comedy to the film -- after all anyone who has lived on this earth for sometimes begins to realize that many people are not forthcoming or able to relay the truth.

A study in perception.

I've had a lot of discussions over the years; who's reality is the 'real' one? I used to maintain the last one was the 'real' one. Now, as an actual adult, I see the nuance that the director was aiming for. Definitely not for the disaffected or easily overwhelmed. VERY Japanese in presentation - though Western in approach.

I can't believe that when I got this movie the case was locked!!! I hear that Mifune was in it again!!! :D But I haven't even seen it yet and I'm already giving it 5/5 stars!!!! :D

Definitely a film that makes you think. Four different accounts of a death: the crazy, cackling bandit (Toshirô Mifune, who was excellent); the woodcutter; the defiled woman; and the dead samurai, through a medium, from beyond the grave. Four accounts. And no solution. The torrential downpour as the flashbacks were puzzled through, and the play of light and shadow from the trees as the emotional event transpired was purely elegant. From displays of explosive emotion to no less powerful periods of silence with nothing but thoughts, and expressive eyes. This was my first Kurosawa film. Won't be the last. FIVE STARS.
