This book touches on many topics. On the surface, it appears to be a fantastic survival story about a protector and a child, but the author also delivers her views about what it means to live in a world alongside other lives. There are many subtle but hard lessons that are elegantly weaved into the story. I recommend this to anybody with a thoughtful mind, but anyone simply looking for an adventure will find that here too.

There's also an animated adaptation, which I highly recommend. It actually expands a little on the story in the light novel, and I would say it's one of the most underrated masterpieces out there.
