Description

Society of Architectural Historians lecture: Housing the Mentally Ill: A look at the history and architecture of asylums in America.

Peter Wollenberg, architectural conservator, will talk about the architectural history of housing the mentally ill, primarily in the 19th and early 20th century, during the heyday of large asylums around the country. A brief history of social policies and attitudes before and after this period will be included to understand the emergence and subsequent decline of these large institutions.

Peter will include images from the St. Louis Hospital on Arsenal Street from when he worked on a major restoration and renovation project there in the late 90s.
